ABOUT SANDRA
“Sandra Antognazzi’s strikingly quiet, powerful presence made each stretched calligraphic pose count...” The New York Times
Born and raised in Argentina, I discovered my passion for dance during my teenage years and have been devoted to it ever since. I began my training as a modern dance concert performer, studying with master teachers in both modern and ballet. In Argentina, I performed with renowned choreographer Ana María Stekelman, whose innovative work first introduced me to Argentine tango.
Alongside my performing career, I began teaching early on, driven by a desire to help others experience joy, self-expression, and a sense of community through movement. Teaching has remained a central part of my artistic identity.
After relocating to New York, I performed as a principal dancer with various companies. Over time, I felt a strong pull to reconnect with my cultural roots, which led me to fully integrate tango into my work. I approached tango as a social dance grounded in improvisation, musicality, and human connection. I returned frequently to Argentina to study with master instructors, partnered with celebrated Argentine tango dancers, and toured extensively in the U.S. and internationally. In 2000, I founded my own company, FUSION TANGO, blending contemporary movement with traditional tango forms.
Some of my performance credits include The Tango Diaries; directing and choreographing Pablo Aslan’s Avantango; Todo Tango with the Arturo O’Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra; Tango & Tango with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra; Leonardo Suárez Paz’s Cuartetango; and Ensemble Rómulo Larrea’s Tangos de Gardel a Piazzolla. These works have been presented at venues such as Town Hall, Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall, Queens Theatre in the Park Summer Festival, and the Spanish Repertory Theater, among others.
I bring extensive experience as an educator, having served as Adjunct Faculty at Ramapo College’s School of Contemporary Arts from 2002 to 2024. I have also taught at Bergen Community College, You Should Be Dancing Studio, the Center for Modern Dance Education, and the Park Performing Arts Center. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from SUNY Empire State University, where I deepened my research into movement, pedagogy, and teaching philosophies.
In 2025, I completed a certification in AdapTango Fundamentals for Older Adults and Individuals with Neurotoxic and Neurodegenerative Conditions, approved by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and provided by MDT Education Solutions in association with Friends of Argentine Tango.
In 2011, I founded Hoboken Tango Lab, creating a welcoming and inclusive space for students who followed me from various studios. The Lab continues to serve as a supportive community where people of all backgrounds can learn, connect, and experience the transformative power of dance.
